General Questions

What is Feng Shui?
It is a 5,000-year-old art and science working with the inherent qualities of nature to create supportive living and working environments.

What is the value of Feng Shui in modern life?
Feng Shui is uniquely comprehensive in connecting with the natural world helping us organize our homes or businesses into peaceful and productive environments. A Feng Shui lens can often detect hidden energetic problems and find simple & sustainable solutions that boost integral health, creativity, and productivity goals.

Some of Feng Shui sounds like ancient superstitions. Does it have any scientific basis or practical foundation?
As Feng Shui has had such a long history, some of its subtleties have sometimes been overly simplified or made into rigid systems eventually becoming disconnected from reality and therefore offering only limited value.

Yet the true foundation of Feng Shui is rooted in the practical applications of integral Taoist science.  Ancient Taoists and Feng Shui practitioners had a wide understanding of life. Today their wise knowledge is confirmed in numerous fields of science such as astronomy, astro-physics, nutritional science, behavioral science, ecology, environmental psychology, environmental health, color and sound therapy, quantum physics and more.

Feng Shui is part of the Eight Pillars of integral Taoist practice that includes self-development skills such as Qigong, meditation, and the I Ching.  This training gradually evolves discerning abilities that go beyond the intellect and the five senses to include the depth of human intuitive skills.

Must you adhere to a certain set of beliefs to see any “results” in Feng Shui?

No, but the Feng Shui practitioner must bring a clear understanding of the science of energy and of the natural laws of balance to bring value to clients.

Does it require a major capital investment to get any benefit from Feng Shui?

No, a little Feng Shui will always help. There are no ideal Feng Shui locations and there are always a variety of methods available to solve most problems. Only in certain extreme situations, the advice might be to simply move.

Consultants strive to give simple solutions using their creativity to help resolve Feng Shui issues that work within the client’s budget.

What are the keys to understanding Feng Shui?

It is often called “acupuncture for space.” In acupuncture, it is said that any blockage can lead to disease. Thus, both Feng Shui & acupuncture harmonize Chi flow and resolve blockages within and around a location, leading to a more well-balanced condition that optimizes the health potential in any system (the body or a particular space).

How does it work?

Focusing on a particular location, we first identify issues, diagnose blockages, excesses, and deficiencies, and then design Feng Shui solutions to bring harmony and establish a healthy dynamic balance that address one or more issues initially identified. We use the basic Taoist science of Yin / Yang and Five Elements. We then apply specific Feng Shui tools such as the directional Ba Gua map, colors, shapes, and more. A Feng Shui treatment for instance might be as simple as adding red cushions or spotlights to bring a warm Heart energy, or trim an overgrown planting, opening up our view of the world through a living room window. The “magic” of Feng Shui lies in selecting the key elements that will improve the entire energetic quality of a space.

Is it difficult to learn? More difficult for a Westerner?

No, but learning Feng Shui requires patience, organization, a good practical approach and an open mind willing to explore, visit places and experience different environments.  Experience will always override technical information and will enable you to see the connections between the imbalances in the space reflected in your client’s life. You will therefore also need to become a good coach for working out solutions with clients, blending their tastes with the needs of the project.

I have a natural feel about different spaces and love to decorate. Will that help me in practicing Feng Shui?

Yes. Feng Shui will help you further develop your creative talents and apply them to bring more practical solutions and more benefit to your clients.

About the Feng Shui Level I Course

I have never done a home study online Course.  How does it work?

Once you sign up for this Level I Course, you are automatically led to your virtual classroom.  All information, materials and tools for your learning are placed in this virtual classroom, and we guide you on how to organize your studies and proceed with the steps of the Course.  As you accomplish the assignments, whether they are listening to video lectures and taking notes, going through the Course workbooks, journaling your Feng Shui experiences, working on your own space or a friend’s, or participating in monthly live stream sessions with your classmates and your Feng Shui guides, you gradually familiarize yourself with all the tools and know-how of Feng Shui practice. You proceed with the flexibility of choosing your own study schedule over a period of 5 months to one year.  The Course then culminates in the presentations of 2 Feng Shui projects that you are by now more than ready to present to your classmates and guides.

How much practice is included in the Course?

All concepts presented in this Course are based on actual practice. Our goal as teachers is also very practical: to help you raise your awareness of the energetic movements that form our environment and to educate your ability to bring balance and harmony in an environment.  We help you refine your perception by proposing related Qigong and meditation exercises and a series of experiential Feng Shui assignments, suggest surveys to help personal assessment of various aspects of life, and in general encourage you to relate all information presented to actual life experience. We also ask you to work on 2 Feng Shui projects to directly put into practice what you learn.

Can you explain the Course fee?

Our Level I Course costs $1300 and includes complete access to all pdfs (downloadable materials) & videotapes viewing (25 hours of lecture) for up to one year, live stream sessions, preparation and presentations exam, certification & registration as a Five Healths Feng Shui Consultant with College of Tao, plus pro-rated first year COT credential fee with access to our consultant forum / Course library.

I would like to take the Course just for personal interest, is this possible?

Yes, you can.  The course will give you a solid understanding of Feng Shui and you can use this knowledge to work on your house and help your friends as well.  We also encourage anyone to work and present their Feng Shui projects as your guides and classmates will all participate in helping you in this assignment.  The fee for personal study will remain the same as for professional certification.

I would like to offer or include Feng Shui services in my professional toolkit, is this Course preparing me for this?

Yes, The Course is perfectly suited for a TCM practitioner or wholistic health practitioner who wish to include Feng Shui for their patients and clients.  Also a perfect addition for anyone in real estate, construction, interior design and the like.  Within the Course, we provide sample Feng Shui reports, Feng Shui consultation templates, and business development ideas.  As a Feng Shui Consultant graduated from FSS, you also participate in a peer consultant forum including a Level I Course library, new materials, discussions, and yearly live stream sessions.

Level I presents the basic, underlying principles of Feng Shui for each of the Five Health modules. Isn’t this repetitive?

Yes, this material is central in being able to think in Feng Shui terms. Care is taken to modify each presentation from a new angle befitting its context with each of the Five Health modules. As you work through Experiential Feng Shui and the development of your two projects while being continually refreshed by a new look at FS principles, you develop an integral understanding and your own independent know-how, a solid foundation for your real-life Feng Shui practice.

I’m an acupuncturist. How does Feng Shui relate to traditional Chinese medicine? Will my TCM training help me in Feng Shui?

They are both tools for restoring a healthy flow of Chi – energy, bringing balance to the internal or external space. In each case we need to be familiar with the relative conditions of Yin / Yang and the Five Elements, where there may be an Excess or Deficiency and apply the corresponding remedy. In Feng Shui, we treat the space much like we treat the body in acupuncture. Instead of placing needles, we improve energy flow within and without, considering doors, windows, hallways & furniture, changing shapes & colors, all following similar natural principles to restore balanced health. We consider a space and its occupant as a continuum: by harmonizing the space, we indirectly help our client toward wellness.
