Our History

Yo San Ni
Madame Ni

Our story begins in China with our grandfather, Yo San Ni, born in 1870.

A classical Chinese physician and Taoist teacher, he lived in a time when medicine, philosophy, spirituality, and daily life were deeply interconnected. Healing was not simply a profession — it was a way of being.

From him came not only generations of medical knowledge passed down through our family, but a deeper understanding that true healing must care for the whole person: body, mind, relationships, purpose, and spirit. These principles would later become the foundation of the Five Healths of the Integral Way.

Within this lineage was also Madame Cheng, Shi-Kun (Madame Ni), known as the Mother of the Yellow Court — a Taoist spiritual teacher representing the feminine dimension of cultivation. Her teachings emphasized direct inner knowing, intuitive wisdom, and spiritual freedom lived through everyday life. She often expressed the essence of Taoist awareness in simple terms, describing the mind as

“a bright pearl, rolling freely with no obstruction.”

The lineage continued through future generations of the Ni Family, preserving and transmitting traditions rooted in Taoist philosophy, Traditional Chinese Medicine, energetic cultivation, meditation, martial arts, and holistic wellbeing.

Master Hua-Ching Ni (OmNi) later carried these teachings from China to the West, helping preserve Taoist wisdom and make it accessible through decades of teaching, writing, and healing work.

Today, Dr. Mao Shing Ni and Dr. Daoshing Ni continue this lineage through education, clinical practice, and the ongoing development of the Integral Way tradition.

The College of Tao exists as a living continuation of this family lineage — preserving ancient wisdom while adapting it for modern life through education, healing arts, and community.

Grandmaster Hua Ching Ni, also known as OmNi, carried his family’s teachings from China to Taiwan and eventually to the United States in 1976.

A Taoist master, healer, philosopher, martial artist, and prolific author, OmNi dedicated his life to preserving the Integral Way tradition through teaching, healing work, and the many books he authored on Taoist philosophy, the I Ching, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, meditation, and self-cultivation.

In 1985, he officially retired from medical practice, which was continued by his sons, Dr. Mao Shing Ni and Dr. Daoshing Ni. Leadership of the College of Tao was later overseen by Dr. Mao Shing Ni.

In the early 1990s, OmNi returned to Asia and entered a life of retreat and seclusion devoted to quietude & simplicity.
